Making Snow!

It's SNOWING!  Those words might seem "everyday humdrum" to some of you...but we live in South Carolina!!  Rarely do we get a white day - some winters once or twice...most winters not usually.  But soon it will be SNOWING -- in my LIVING ROOM!!!
I got out as many pairs of scissors I could round up and a large stack of paper and put the children to work.  They have been cutting and oohing and ahhing and giggling for a couple of hours.....MAKING SNOWFLAKES!

I asked a friend on Sunday..."Hey, do you know how to make snowflakes?  I don't know if I remember or not."  She says, "Everybody learns that in 3rd grade!"  I just laughed...I was homeschooled back in 1969 when I would have supposedly been cutting snowflakes in 3rd grade art class!  Maybe my mom didn't know it was in the "scope&sequenc" for the 3rd grade!
But my friend was sweet and understanding (she's a sweet homeschool mom too) and popped a pair of scissors out of her purse and I handed her a scrap of paper and she proceeded to give me a crash course - SNOWFLAKES 101. Then as her teenage daughter looked on she said, WOW! I want to make some of those...they are beautiful..and she said to her daughter..."Maybe we should make some snowflakes in school this week?"
I know I have made them before but my brain was foggy...um..I mean snowy.

It all came back to me once we started folding and cutting....they just get prettier the more you cut and fold!  If you need special help look at this great instruction sheet online.

Just start with a simple piece of paper.
Fold in half then in half again about 4 more times.
The center of the paper is your flakes center.
Cut your outer edge first.
If you make deep cuts they are really pretty.
Then just keep snipping the folds until you have a pretty, lacey snowflake.

Ours turned out lovely...and each one is unique just like the ones who made them.
They have made every sort of sizes and many are extremely delicate, some are beautiful, some are sort of wink-wonky but all are special.  So....if you don't have snow today....why don't you make your own?

POSTNOTE: BE prepared to have the vacuum cleaner handy...my living room floor looks like it really did snow!  i.e. covered in zillions of snips of white paper!
