Welcome
Mother's Basic Lessons
I wanted to really encourage all of our members and anyone else interested in what we are doing and why we are here. So.I thought I’d share a little bit with you about why I’m here and writing lessons to homemakers!
Growing up my mother taught me so many things, yet she couldn’t teach me everything. She was wise enough to know if she taught me the basics, I could teach myself and forge forward on my own if I was so inclined.
Mother taught me to sew on the sewing machine and taught me my first embroidery stitches. She also gave me the basics of cooking and baking, gardening, cleaning, laundry and then turned her kitchen and her home over to me whenever I wanted to cook or bake or pretend to be grown up and be the homemaker. Because she was so free about allowing me to practice these skills at home and I had her at my fingertips if something went wrong, I was able to learn many things she knew would best come from trial and error.
When I was 11 years old I made my first quilt. Mother had never made a quilt before but between us we had the basic idea of what to do. I used babysitting money I had saved up to purchase 4 yards of five different calico fabrics that I liked. Little did I know that was enough fabric to make at least 4 large quilts! Since mother only knew how to ‘cover’ old wool blankets with calico fabric to help them last longer, we used a wool blanket instead of quilt batting. And since mother was so busy at the time and I was too eager to wait for her, I measured my bed and started on my quilt. It was a simple quilt with six inch square blocks in diagonal rows, but it was pretty and I was ecstatic!
Until I laid it on my bed and realized I had measured the TOP dimensions of my bed without taking into consideration the overhang needed to fit the whole bed and not just the flat top of the bed. Still, I was proud of my endeavors enough to attempt another quilt - a very large quilt for my parent’s bed!
This little story is just to show you that although I had time as a child to learn as I went and if I made mistakes it was much easier to live with them; there are many very busy wives and mothers out there who want to learn new homemaking skills and could learn much quicker with simple lessons that lay everything out in step-by-step directions.
This is why Martha and I have joined together to form The Homemaker’s Mentor.to hold your hand while you learn new skills, to write out simple lessons that walk you through each step so you aren’t stumbling along the way and to provide a private forum where you can ask questions and members can encourage each other and share stories.
Wherever you are on your path as a homemaker - you’ll never be alone with The Homemaker’s Mentor.
