"I don't have a repellent idea, but I do know how to get rid of most of them.
 
At night, they will roost on the ceiling.  Fill up a cup with water and soap suds.  Get it pretty full.  A clear or white cup works best.  Put the rim of the cup up around the fly on the ceiling.  The fly will have to drop down and turn over to fly away.  It will get caught up the suds and be unable to fly away.  Within about 3 seconds it will drown and fall to the bottom of the cup. 
 
Easy, painless, and if you have enough tall children (an a tall husband) they can get into a competition to see who can catch the most flies.  We have caught over 300 a night in our prime Fly Season.  It used to kill me when Eric had a week of working nights... the flies would take over.  But now I have a couple kids who can help out.
 
Works great.  You'll have to try it.  We've had company get into it and compete with my husband on who can get the most.
